The PMO is responsible for the development and oversight of training materials to raise project management competency, promote best practices, and disseminate lessons learned. Berkeley Lab staff are encouraged to register for upcoming training and view videos and presentations.
PMO Training Courses
Project Management Basics
This annual training describes the characteristics of a project, project types and the “colors” of money, as well as the relationships among mission, program, projects, line management, and the project team. The training covers the primary process areas of the Project Management Institute Standard for the Project Management Framework, additional process areas required by DOE, and project management resources available through PMO. The intended audience is those new to project management and those who may want a refresher course on the Project Management Framework.
Managing Projects Under DOE Order 413.3B
This annual training will introduce the basics of DOE Order 413.3B by presenting an overview and process model for the management of “413 projects.” The training is intended for those new to the DOE environment, or those who want an overview of the stage gates and requirements that make up DOE O 413.3B. The training will cover the following topics: the importance of projects to LBNL; the relationship between DOE organizations and LBNL projects; the 413 Critical Decision stage gates and project phases; PMO resources to assist 413 projects at the lab; and more.
EVMS CAM Training
Projects tracked by the PMO use the Earned Value Management System (EVMS), a standard methodology that uses project scope, cost, and schedule to measure project progress and LBNL rigorously maintains a DOE-certified EVMS to ensure eligibility for future projects. This includes administering an EVM training regimen for specific project team members when Berkeley Lab is the lead on a DOE Order 413.3B project (above $50M in total project costs). In this scenario, Control Account Managers (CAMs), Project Managers, and Project Directors must complete the following 3 courses:
- PMO 0100: Project Management Earned Value Control Account Manager (CAM) Training
- Presentation slides (Part 1 – Nassar; Part 2 – Jacobs, Rasalkar, Tran)
- PMO 0150: Project Management Earned Value CAM Refresher training (required annually)
- CFO 0210: Financial Management Overview for EVMS – CAMs (offered by OCFO)
See the Berkeley Lab Training website for course descriptions and more information. The PMO works with project teams and the Project Controls group to identify individuals who require training.
Project Management Professional Continuing Education Credit
If you are a Project Management Institute (PMI) credential holder, including Project Management Professional (PMP), PMO training, seminars, and guides may be eligible as Professional Development Units (PDUs) to fulfill continuing education course credit. See PMI PDU Education webpage or use the directions here to report PM seminars and PMO training courses as PDUs.
